Al Fahidi Historical District Acrylic Painting
This is an acrylic painting using the technique of blocking in and glazing before the additional details are added to the subjects. The artist uses the traditional marketplace of Al Fahidi Historical District as the inspirational subject for this painting.
Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood (Al Bastakiya) is Dubai’s oldest heritage area, which allows visitors to glimpse the traditional life and experience Dubai’s pearl-diving era before the discovery of oil. This painting depicts a typical Arabian afternoon solstice when the marketplace is calm. The artist uses Naples yellow, burnt sienna, burnt umber, and black to paint the sturdy and rugged structure of the old buildings of Al Fahidi. The heavy shadows of purple, burnt umber, and whites under the exhaust pipes and thresholds of the buildings suggest the time of day when the temperature soars and the busyness lulls.
The artist paints fertile shrubs on top of the building, which adds a bright, cheerful contrast against the rugged, stony walls of the buildings. The clear and cloudless sky of blue peeks subtle in the background to give an impression of a warm and balmy day. The artist paints an ‘Ahlan’ (Welcome) sign on the door to create a sort of enigmatic invitation to explore the quietness of the noon.
